Dr. Nick Liu
As a surgeon, portfolio entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist, Dr. Nick Liu has built a life grounded in discipline, resilience and service. Recognizing the complexity of society and the need for support at every level, he established Foundation XNL to expand opportunity, foster meaningful connections and contribute to a more compassionate society.

Origins
Foundation XNL was born from a story that spans generations and continents. Dr. Nick Liu's grandparents and parents lived through political upheaval in China, rebuilding their lives in America through discipline, sacrifice and determination. As a first-generation immigrant, Dr. Liu has experienced firsthand that America truly is the land of equal opportunity. His family’s journey instilled in Dr. Liu a deep appreciation for the opportunities this country provides — and a belief that those who are lifted up have a responsibility to lift others.
Mentorship
A defining influence in Dr. Liu’s early medical career was orthopedic surgeon and humanitarian Dr. Matthew Lin. His example of service, leadership and generosity helped shape Dr. Liu’s approach to medicine and business, reinforcing the idea that meaningful impact comes from using one’s success to support others.
Training and early career
Dr. Liu credits orthopedic surgeon and program director Dr. Wayne Gunckle with having a profound impact on the course of his life. By offering him a position in the highly competitive residency program at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center, Dr. Gunckle opened the door to opportunities that shaped Dr. Liu’s future. During his residency years, Dr. Liu trained across several respected programs, gaining broad experience in orthopedic surgery, pediatric orthopedics and trauma through rotations in Cincinnati, New Orleans and Jacksonville. These diverse environments strengthened both his clinical expertise and his commitment to serving communities with compassion and skill.
A turning point
In 2021, after the passing of his father during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Liu reflected deeply on family, legacy and the reality that our time is finite. The question became not what we achieve for ourselves, but how we use our resources, knowledge and relationships to create lasting benefit for others. This moment became the catalyst for establishing what is now Foundation XNL — a commitment to expanding opportunity and strengthening communities.
Foundation in action
Since its founding, Foundation XNL has invested more than $1 million in initiatives that support education, youth development, food security, healthcare access and grassroots community programs. Each partnership reflects the Foundation’s belief that meaningful change requires both resources and genuine engagement.
